Thomas Mapfumo has returned to Zimbabwe, eight years after his last major homecoming, with the veteran musician set to perform at two high-profile private events.
Mapfumo, known to generations of Zimbabweans as Mukanya, arrived in Harare on Tuesday evening after travelling from his base in the United States.
His arrival was brought forward from an earlier expected date and was confirmed by footage shared online by officials who met him on the journey.
The 81-year-old musician was welcomed at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Minister Anselem Sanyatwe, Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Monica Mutsvangwa and promoter Josh Hozheri.

Mapfumo is scheduled to perform at Jah Prayzah‘s wedding and at businessman Wicknell Chivayo‘s birthday celebrations.
The two appearances form a US$1 million agreement, with Mapfumo due to receive US$500,000 from Chivayo for each performance.
He confirmed the arrangement in July after weeks of speculation about whether he would accept this life-changing offer.
Mapfumo has presented the return as a professional engagement rather than a political statement.
He also described Jah Prayzah as his son and said he was coming to perform at the younger musician’s wedding.
A return with a complicated history
Mapfumo’s trips home have always carried significance beyond the music.
His Chimurenga style, built around traditional Zimbabwean musical forms and modern instrumentation, became closely associated with the country’s liberation struggle.
His later songs also criticised political and social conditions, while his opposition to Robert Mugabe’s government contributed to his long absence from Zimbabwe.
His 2018 return was particularly memorable. After about 14 years away, Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited performed at Glamis Arena in Harare in front of a large crowd, in what was billed as his homecoming bira.
This year’s visit has a different character. Rather than beginning with a large public concert, Mapfumo’s immediate commitments are private celebrations.
That distinction matters to his wider fan base, many of whom have not seen the singer perform at home since the 2018 return.
Another Zimbabwe show is expected
There could, however, be an opportunity for a much wider audience to see Mapfumo before he leaves the country.
A major public performance is expected in December, with promoter Josh Hozheri of Jazz 105 Promotions involved in organising the event.
Details including the venue and final date are yet to be announced.
His immediate focus, though, is the pair of performances that brought him back.
