Mayor Praises Selekta Base Foundation
The Mayor of Harare, Councillor Jacob Mafume, has praised the efforts of the Selekta Base Foundation for its continued work in uplifting communities through philanthropic outreach and entertainment-driven initiatives.
At a community event held on Saturday in Sunningdale, the Foundation, led by founder Arnold Tinashe Chigwerewe, popularly known as Selekta Base, donated food hampers to elderly residents and individuals living with disabilities.
“Together We Can Make a Difference”

The event, which drew support from car clubs, bike clubs, friends, and community members, served as a testament to the foundation’s guiding theme: Together We Can Make a Difference.
Mayor Mafume commended the foundation not only for its charitable acts but also for contributing to job creation and the capital’s entertainment industry.
Known for organising popular car burnout events, Selekta Base has carved a niche in community engagement that fuses social responsibility with urban youth culture.
“Bringing such activities to Harare not only entertains but also creates employment and unites people,” said Mafume. “We applaud Arnold and his team for this initiative and for caring for the most vulnerable among us.”
Mayor Addresses City Challenges

The mayor also took the opportunity to engage directly with residents on critical service delivery issues plaguing Harare.
“We are aware of the water shortages, sewer bursts, and poor road infrastructure,” he told the crowd. “Council is actively working with government ministries to implement sustainable solutions.”
Mafume’s remarks reflect growing public concern over deteriorating municipal services in the capital, especially in high-density suburbs such as Sunningdale.
A Grassroots Approach to Giving

Speaking after the event, Selekta Base emphasised the foundation’s philosophy of accessible philanthropy. “You don’t have to wait until you’re wealthy to help others,” he said. “It starts with compassion, unity, and action.”
He extended gratitude to all supporters and reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to carrying out similar initiatives throughout 2026.
The Selekta Base Foundation has grown from humble beginnings to become a community-oriented platform recognised for blending social activism with lifestyle culture.
Through ongoing projects and events, it aims to continue reaching disadvantaged groups while inspiring others to participate in meaningful change.
Selekta Base Foundation: A Legacy of Giving

Over the past few years, the Selekta Base Foundation has consistently organised charitable outreach events, many of which are tied to Zimbabwe’s growing car spinning culture.
In early 2024, Selekta Base hosted a major car burnout event at Borrowdale Racecourse and later used proceeds to donate groceries, clothing, and blankets to more than 100 elderly residents at a local care facility.
That initiative, like others before it, was made possible through collaboration with car clubs and spinners across Harare, who continue to be central partners in the foundation’s mission.
Beyond food and clothing, the Foundation has also supported local schoolchildren with stationery donations and community clean-up campaigns, combining entertainment, education, and civic action.
Looking Ahead
With rising community needs across Zimbabwe’s capital, grassroots efforts such as those led by Selekta Base are becoming increasingly vital.
As the city grapples with infrastructure and service delivery challenges, partnerships between civic leaders and social organisations may hold the key to addressing both immediate needs and long-term development goals.
