Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, born on 22 September 1952, was a celebrated Zimbabwean musician, businessman, and philanthropist. Over his illustrious career spanning more than four decades, Mtukudzi released over 60 albums, blending traditional African sounds with modern music elements to create a unique genre known as Tuku Music. His work often addressed social issues, making him a voice for change and a cultural icon.

Mtukudzi was not just a musician but also a human rights activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the Southern Africa Region. His song “Neria,” which speaks about the struggles of widows, became an anthem for social justice and women’s rights.

Mtukudzi’s influence extended beyond music, as he was involved in various campaigns against HIV/AIDS, using his platform to raise awareness and fight stigma associated with the disease.

OMIFA: A Celebration of Art and Community

OMIFA aims to celebrate Mtukudzi’s legacy under the theme “DAIRAI, SABELANI, ANSWER!” which calls on communities to unite and build a desired future together.

The event will feature a commemorative dinner, workshops, and performances spanning various artistic disciplines, including music, dance, art, craft, fashion, theatre, and film.

There will also be activities for children, making it a family-friendly event.

The festival will announce its headliners and full artist lineup soon, promising a star-studded celebration that honors Mtukudzi’s contributions to the arts.

It serves not only as a tribute to his work but also as an inspiration for future generations of artists and cultural leaders.
