A New Showcase: Mhande Dance
In 2023, the Jikinya Dance Festival will spotlight the enchanting Mhande Dance as its centerpiece.
Under the overarching theme of “Building Zimbabwe through Dance,” this year’s competition seeks to bring forth the rich traditions of the Karanga people, who primarily inhabit the Midlands and Masvingo provinces of Zimbabwe.
Mhande Dance: More Than Just Moves
Mhande Dance is a profound indigenous song-and-dance ritual intrinsic to the Karanga community.
This dance, performed during the Mutoro and Kurova ceremonies, transcends mere entertainment.
It carries a deep historical significance and conveys profound meaning.
Preserving Cultural Heritage at Jikinya Dance Festival
The inclusion of Mhande as the focal point of the Jikinya Dance Festival is a significant step in preserving the cultural practices of Zimbabwe’s indigenous communities.
This dance form stands as an artistic expression of the values and beliefs cherished by the various communities where it is practiced.
Mhande Dance serves as a vital link between the living and the ancestral spirits.
It plays a crucial role in ceremonies like Kurova guva and the Mutoro, symbolizing the reunion of ancestral spirits and rain-making rituals, respectively.
Last year, Amabhiza took center stage at the Jikinya Dance Festival, with schools from all across Zimbabwe showcasing this dance, rooted in Matabeleland South Province.
The Jikinya Dance Festival is expected to witness the participation of over 5000 primary schools.
This spectacular event is meticulously organized by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and the National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH), with the generous support of Delta Beverages Zimbabwe.
The Jikinya Dance Festival 2023 promises to be a mesmerizing showcase of Zimbabwean culture, with the Mhande Dance taking the spotlight.
As schools from across the country converge to celebrate this vibrant tradition, it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the cultural heritage that binds communities and bridges the gap between the past and the present.
