Tatenda Mahachi Nominated for 18th Crown Gospel Music Awards
Zimbabwean gospel musician Tatenda Mahachi has been nominated for the 18th Crown Gospel Music Awards, marking his second consecutive appearance at one of Africa’s most prestigious gospel music events.
Mahachi’s hit song “Muri Mwari” (You Are God) earned him a spot in the highly competitive Best of Africa category, which celebrates outstanding gospel talent from across the continent.
The nominations were unveiled at an elegant all-white ceremony held at The Stamford in Greyville, Durban, on Friday, 31 October.
According to the organisers, this year’s edition received a record-breaking 882 entries, from which 125 nominees were selected across 25 categories.
Mahachi is nominated alongside Eswatini’s Sphiwo Ndoni and Nothando Hlophe, as well as fellow Zimbabwean gospel star Everton Mlalazi.
The Crown Gospel Music Awards: A Celebration of Faith and Music
Launched in 2008 by South African media personality Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, the Crown Gospel Music Awards have become one of the continent’s most respected platforms for recognising excellence in Christian music.
The awards honour artists who use gospel music to inspire hope, faith and social change.
Over the years, the event—often dubbed “Africa’s biggest night in gospel”—has drawn leading musicians, choirs and worship leaders from across Africa.
The 2025 ceremony will be held on 23 November at the Durban ICC Convention Centre, a venue renowned for hosting high-profile cultural and entertainment events.
Mahachi on Representing Zimbabwean Gospel
Reacting to the news, Mahachi described the nomination as both humbling and affirming.
“Being nominated for the second year in a row means a lot to me. It’s a reflection of consistency, but more importantly, it’s proof that the message of the gospel continues to resonate beyond borders,” he said.
The Harare-based artist, who recently launched his new album “Renewed“, added that the recognition is not just personal but a victory for Zimbabwean gospel music.
“This is about representing my country and our faith-inspired sound on an international stage. ‘Muri Mwari’ is a song of gratitude and faith, and I’m thankful that people across Africa are connecting with its message,” Mahachi said.
