Holy Ten Granted Bail
Zimbabwean hip-hop artist Mukudzei Chitsama, better known by his stage name Holy Ten, has appeared before a Harare magistrate and been granted US$500 bail, days after his arrest over allegations that he raped a 14-year-old girl.
The 27-year-old musician, one of the country’s most recognised hip-hop performers, was taken into custody after police received a report from the family of the teenager.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, saying at the time that further details would follow as investigations continued.
What he is accused of
According to details that have emerged since the arrest, the teenager and the musician are said to have first made contact on social media, with Holy Ten reportedly telling her she would feature in one of his upcoming music videos.
Sources say she later travelled to a recording session in Harare, after which the alleged assault is said to have taken place at his home in the suburb of Hatfield.
Holy Ten has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against him are yet to be tested in court.
He is expected to enter a plea once the matter proceeds beyond the current pre-trial stage.
Court appearance and bail conditions
Holy Ten appeared at the Harare Magistrates Courts, where he was first taken in for pre-trial vetting by the district public prosecutor’s office.
He is being represented by prominent Harare defence lawyer Admire Rubaya.
The magistrate granted him bail on the standard local surety of US$500.
As part of his bail conditions, the case was remanded to 7 August, giving investigators time to complete their inquiries, confirm the complainant’s age through official records, and finalise a forensic report — steps that are routine in cases of this nature in Zimbabwe’s courts.
Who is Holy Ten?
Holy Ten has built a substantial following in Zimbabwe’s hip-hop scene, with songs including “Banga” among his best-known work.
Fans know him by the nicknames “Mujaya” and “Ba Ju,” and he founded his own label, Samanyanga Sounds, as his career grew.
He has been active on the Zimbabwean hip-hop scene since around 2016, but it was the 2021 single “Ndaremerwa” that turned him into a mainstream name, followed by the album “Risky Life,” which dealt with themes including poverty, corruption and mental health.
Other well-known tracks in his catalogue include “Banga,” “Pressure,” “Ucharamba Uchipisa,” “Hoo Zvangu” and “Violence.”
Holy Ten has described himself as the “Leader of the Youth” and “Speaker of the Truth,” billing his music as socially conscious commentary on everyday life in Zimbabwe.
He has collaborated with a wide range of artists over the years, including Winky D, Takura, Voltz JT, ProBeatz and Anita Jaxson.
Beyond music, he has built a public profile as one of the industry’s more outspoken figures, frequently trading barbs with fellow artists on social media — a trait some fans and commentators say he has used to keep himself in the public conversation. He is married to model and singer Kimberley Richards, with whom he has a child.
A history of public clashes
The rape allegations are not the first time Holy Ten’s conduct has drawn scrutiny.
He has previously been accused by critics of leaning on controversy to stay relevant in a crowded music industry.
Among the most talked-about episodes was his public falling-out with fellow musician Takura, whom he accused of fading from public view — remarks that drew criticism given Takura had recently spoken about recovering from substance abuse.
He has also clashed publicly with artist Voltz JT and criticised veteran musician Jah Prayzah.
Perhaps most notable was his running feud with Zimdancehall star Winky D.
In an online interview, Holy Ten said he had messaged Winky D directly to tell him he intended to damage his career, going on to publicly brand him deceptive and manipulative.
What happens next
With the case remanded to 7 August, attention now turns to the outcome of the police investigation, including confirmation of the complainant’s age and the results of forensic testing, both of which magistrates cited as conditions for the matter to proceed.
Until the case is concluded, the allegations against Holy Ten remain just that: allegations, which he is entitled to contest in court.
