GTA 6 Extended Look Tops Netflix’s Chart In Debut Week

The screening of the GTA 6 Extended Look attracted large numbers on Netflix.

Grand Theft Auto has always had a habit of breaking the internet. This time, it broke into a place nobody expected: the Netflix charts.

Rockstar Games and Netflix released “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” on Thursday, 27 August, a 27-minute special built entirely from in-game footage captured on PlayStation 5.

The GTA 6 Extended Look follows protagonists Jason and Lucia through the fictional Vice City, offering the longest look yet at a game that has spent years living almost entirely on hype and speculation.

It had only six hours of exclusivity on Netflix before Rockstar released it on YouTube as well, but that was enough time to make history.

A number even Netflix wasn’t expecting

Between its release and the close of Netflix’s weekly viewing window on Sunday 30 August, the special drew 31.1 million views. That made it the most watched title across Netflix’s entire library that week, ahead of every film and television show on the platform, including new arrivals aimed squarely at adult audiences.

In its own category of English language films, it beat the second-placed title by a wide margin, with the thriller “The Whisper Man” trailing on 23.2 million views.

The extended look topped the English language film chart in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks, a spread that says less about game trailers and more about how borderless the appetite for this franchise has become.

Streaming analytics firm Sensor Tower found the premiere pushed Netflix’s mobile app usage up 50 percent and web visits up 125 percent compared with a typical Thursday, figures that suggest people who do not normally think of Netflix as a gaming destination logged on specifically for this.

It is worth some perspective, however. The debut still falls well short of Netflix’s biggest ever opening week for an English language title, held by the fifth season of “Stranger Things” at 59.6 million views.

And the shine has faded quickly by design, with the special’s average daily ranking sliding from second place over the following weekend to fourth or fifth in several major markets within days.

Netflix was never chasing longevity here. It wanted proof it could host a genuine global gaming event, and on that measure alone, it succeeded.

What it means for the actual release

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, with no PC version confirmed and no last generation console support.

Pre-orders opened worldwide on 25 June, with a Standard Edition priced at 79.99 US dollars and an Ultimate Edition at 99.99 US dollars.

Anyone who buys the game before 20 November receives a Vintage Vice City Pack, a bundle of vehicles and outfits styled after the original 2002 Vice City.

Physical copies will reach shelves a week ahead of launch to allow buyers to pre-load, though the box will contain a download code rather than a disc.

Getting hold of it in Zimbabwe

For most Zimbabwean gamers, there are several ways to buy GTA 6.

Digital purchases through the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store require an internationally recognised payment method, which usually means a forex-loaded Visa or Mastercard, or a prepaid PSN or Xbox gift card bought through a local reseller or a relative abroad.

It is a longer process than simply tapping “buy”, but it avoids the shipping delays and markups that come with physical imports.

There are platforms such as Playasia where you can even use the Ecocash Mastercard to buy PSN cards for various regions, including South Africa, the UK and the US.

On the hardware and physical software side, electronics retailers in Harare and Bulawayo that stock PS5 and Xbox consoles typically source new releases through South African or UK suppliers, so expect GTA 6 to land on their shelves a few days after the 19 November date rather than on it.

Cross-border shopping trips to South Africa, where major chains carry day one stock, remain a popular workaround for serious fans who do not want to wait.

Facebook Marketplace and local classifieds sites also see steady trade in consoles and games, though buyers should treat pricing there as negotiable and highly variable given how the local currency situation shifts..
