Chikwata.263 Returns With Halloween Show
Zimbabwe’s trailblazing Mbira-Punk band, Chikwata.263, is set to stage a spine-tingling Halloween concert titled “The Return of Dr. Punkinstain”, in tribute to the late Raymond “Sir Ray” Mupfumira, the group’s original bassist and one of the key architects of their signature sound.
The performance, taking place on October 31 at 14 Aintree Road in Highlands, Harare, marks the band’s first full-scale show since Sir Ray’s passing earlier this year.
Described as a “high-energy spectacle,” the event will celebrate the life and legacy of a musician who helped shape one of Zimbabwe’s most original and defiant sounds — a genre the band famously dubbed Mbira-Punk, fusing traditional mbira melodies with the raw drive of punk rock.
A Night of Music and Memory
Sir Ray’s death left a deep void in Zimbabwe’s alternative music scene. Known for his mastery of the bass guitar, mbira, marimba, and piano, he brought a distinctive versatility and musical depth to Chikwata.263’s sound.
“Ray was the heartbeat of our noise,” said guitarist and vocalist Tomas Brickhill, one of the band’s founding members.
“This show is pure, unfiltered Mbira-Punk — an electrifying noise that refuses to respect any boundaries. We’re back with more energy than ever. This night is dedicated to Ray; it’s a celebration of the raw, unique music we created together. Get your costumes on, because Chikwata is back, and Punk is not dead.”
Brickhill and mbira master Hector Mugani, the remaining founding members, will lead the night’s performance alongside guest acts Randall Tagwireyi, Scott, and Du’s Blues.
Halloween Meets Mbira-Punk
In keeping with the Halloween theme, concert-goers are encouraged to arrive in costume, earning them a discounted entry fee of US$5 before 8pm. Standard entry is US$10. Doors and Du’s Blues Bar open at 6pm, with live music starting at 8pm and continuing “until the dead of night.”
The show’s title — “Dr. Punkinstain” — nods to gothic classics like Frankenstein and Dracula, reflecting Chikwata.263’s creative identity as a “stitched-together” mix of tradition and rebellion.
Promotional posters promise the “Best Rock Show of the Year,” a fitting claim for a band that has long defied musical norms and inspired a generation of experimental artists in Zimbabwe.
Legacy of a Musical Pioneer
Formed in 2011, Chikwata.263 broke new ground with their daring combination of punk energy and Zimbabwe’s ancestral soundscapes.
Singing in both Shona and English, their songs are known for biting social commentary and unflinching honesty.
The band’s contribution to Zimbabwean music was recognised early on when they were named Mbira Band of the Year by the Zimbabwe Mbira Society in 2012.
With “The Return of Dr. Punkinstain”, Chikwata.263 not only celebrates the life of Sir Ray but also reaffirms its role as a fearless innovator in Zimbabwe’s music scene — proving once again that, as their slogan proudly declares, “PUNK IS NOT DEAD.”
