Tory Lanez Receives 10-Year Sentence for Megan Thee Stallion Shooting
Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, has been handed a 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion.
This comes after his conviction in December 2022 for three felonies connected to the incident, where Megan Thee Stallion was wounded in the foot.
Prosecutors had sought a 13-year sentence for the 30-year-old musician, while Lanez’s defense team argued for probation and a residential drug treatment program to address his alcoholism, which they attributed to childhood trauma.
Tory Lanez, who has been in county jail since his conviction, expressed his care for Megan Thee Stallion in court on Tuesday.
He acknowledged that they both bonded over shared losses and used alcohol to cope.
He also admitted to making regrettable remarks and revealing inappropriate secrets during the incident.
Megan Thee Stallion, in a written statement read in court, conveyed the emotional toll the shooting had taken on her, stating, “Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace. Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.”
Tory Lanez’s attorney, Jose Baez, voiced disappointment with the sentence, noting that similar cases involving deaths resulted in shorter prison terms.
On the other hand, George Gascón, the Los Angeles county district attorney, praised Megan Thee Stallion for her perseverance in seeing the trial through despite facing intense scrutiny and criticism.
The shooting transpired in July 2020 as the two artists, accompanied by a friend and Lanez’s bodyguard, were leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood residence.
The verdict has sparked discussions on social media, with varied reactions and the hashtag #FreeToryLanez being used by some supporters who believe he was unfairly treated by the justice system.
