Floyd Mayweather in Zimbabwe: Full Program of the Motherland Tour
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has arrived in Zimbabwe for his highly anticipated Motherland Tour, which begins today.
The retired boxing legend’s original arrival date was postponed, but he finally landed at Harare’s Robert Mugabe International Airport this morning.
The purpose of Mayweather’s visit has been clarified by the tour organizers, who have now released the full program.
Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry is expected to accept a boxing ring donation on behalf of the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board from Better Brands.
Although Coventry has yet to confirm her attendance due to a delayed invitation, technical staff from the Johannesburg-based ring manufacturing company are already in the country for the handover ceremony.
The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, while serving as a technical partner, is not involved in the logistical aspects of the tour.
The main activities of the tour will take place at Number 1 Grounds in Mabvuku, starting at 10:00 AM on Thursday. Mayweather, is expected to arrive at 2:00 PM.
The tour will conclude with an exclusive event titled “The Talk with Floyd Mayweather” at Meikles Hotel, beginning at 7:00 PM.
Mayweather’s visit follows a meeting he had with Scott Sakupwanya, the owner of Better Brands, in the United Arab Emirates last year.
Although a planned exhibition fight was ultimately canceled, expectations remain high that Mayweather’s visit will have a lasting impact on the development of boxing in Zimbabwe.
Mayweather is set to conclude his two-nation tour of the African continent with a trip to South Africa.
In related news, the national super-featherweight title contest between Aliyah Phiri and Ndodana Ncube, initially scheduled for Friday is now on today.
The change is intended to showcase Zimbabwe’s boxing talent and provide Mayweather with an appreciation of the local fighters.
Earlier proposals included exhibition fights between former Commonwealth champion Arifonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika versus Fernando Tom, and Monalisa Sibanda versus Cecilia Pitiseni.
The weigh-in for the Phiri-Ncube bout will take place today in Mabvuku, according to Clyde Musonda, the director of Delta Force Boxing Promotions.
