Holy Ten and Michael Magz responds to Nutty O
Holy Ten and his counterpart Michael Magz recently took to social media to respond to Nutty O who mentioned that there was no record label in Zimbabwe during an interview on the Danny J Show.
The two artistes who have lately been dominating the local music scene alluded to the fact that their record label, Samanyanga Sounds, has been doing well.
“There’s no label in Zimbabwe? Wangu cooler down. So @samanyangasounds is what, a circus? Put some respect on the work we’re pushing out here. People are feeding their families because of the work we do,” said Holy Ten on his Instagram in response to Nutty O.
Commenting on that p;articlar post, Michael Magz had no kind words for the dancehall artiste, even stating that he was mad.
“Ka mupfanha kanopenga aka. Without military touch he wouldn’t even be were he is today. That was a solid and legit stage of his career yakatomuisawo somewhere even though zvakazoitawo ma fallouts azvo. Nhasi vaa apa vakuti Zim haina label. saka @samanyangasounds akuti chii,” wrote Magz.
This whole situation has led to a huge debate with various players in the entertainment industry also adding their views.
Kikky Badass has also enquired on the structure of Michael Magz’s contract, asking how much he was getting from his deal. This has led to a back and forth between the two on social media.
The issue of record labels in the country has been a contentious one with some sections highlighting that there are no proper structures in the local music industry.
South Africa based artist Buffalo Souljah pointed out that local record labels existed but what they are lacking is funding which makes it difficult for them to make a significant impact.
“There’s a difference between a record label and record company. They are artists in Zimbabwe but just coz artists are not matching international standards does not mean there are no artists and they are not trying. Definitely there are record labels but have no funding. In SA, Nigeria and US labels get business loans and stuff so standards will definitely differ so Nutty is not wrong pahuwright wake it’s just context. Must watch full interview n overstand team remapodcast roedit for trends 😃 Unity is only way foward,” said Buffalo Souljah on Instagram.
Another commentator Chofamba Sithole came to the defense of Nutty O stating that some might have misunderstood what the artist meant when he said there were no record labels in the country.
“You don’t understand what he’s saying and it’s ok if you’re illiterate about the music BUSINESS! We had the likes of ZMC in Zim and those labels have not survived the digital era. A label isn’t a recording studio, it’s a multilayered operation encompassing marketing and distribution and so much more. We don’t have a single viable label anymore in Zimbabwe ever since the collapse yaanaZMC. That doesn’t mean there are no recording artists working hard to push their works. A label is like a major wholesalers and distributors, and artists recording and pushing their own staff like you’re doing is like a sole trader store pagrowth point. Now put that in perspective,” said Sithole.
