Gloria Bosman: Remembering the Life and Music of an Iconic Jazz Musician
The South African music industry is mourning the loss of Gloria Bosman, an award-winning jazz musician, composer, and songwriter.
Bosman, who passed away at the age of 50 after a short illness, was a versatile musician who blended her voice with different genres such as gospel, jazz, rock, and Afro sounds.
Her passing was confirmed by the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) on Tuesday.
Bosman was born in Mofolo in Johannesburg and raised in Pimville, Soweto.
She had six albums under her belt, including Tranquillity, The Many Faces of Gloria Bosman, Stop and Think, Nature Dances, Emzini, and Letters from the Heart vol.1.
Her debut album, Tranquillity, which was released in the ’90s, earned her the prestigious award for Best Newcomer and received nominations for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and Best Female Artist at the 2001 South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
She also received two SAMAs and more than 11 nominations, as well as two Kora nominations.
Bosman has shared the stage with legendary South African musicians such as Sibongile Khumalo, Concord Nkabinde, Sipho Mabuse, Moses Molelekwa, Tananas, Vusi Mahlasela, Sipho Gumede, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Hugh Masekela.
She was a non-executive director on SAMRO’s board and had recently been announced as the newest member.
Her contribution to the music industry was significant, not only as a performer but also as a producer, composer, and presenter.
The news of her passing was met with an outpouring of tributes and condolences from fans and fellow musicians.
Jazz legend Sipho Hotstix paid tribute to Bosman on his social media, saying, “I’m devastated to hear the news of the passing of my dear friend, Gloria Bosman. Her music touched the hearts of many, and she will be sorely missed.”
