Winky D Dam View Performance | ZRP cuts set short
Winky D’s performance at Dam View Chikwanha Blue Roof Grill and Bar was cut short as police dragged him off the stage.
This happened as the artiste was about to sing one of his new songs, Ibotso, off his recently released album Eureka Eureka.
Many of his fans started singing “Siyai Gaffa” as is to try and instruct the cops to let the musician go.
Some even started throwing bottles on stage to express their frustrations with the commotion on stage.
Winky was meant to share the stage with other artistes including Toky Vibes and Saintfloew.
The musician is never far from controversy, with some of the songs on his new project laden with lyrics that address issues to do with corruption, poverty and unemployment. Some have taken this as a direct challenge to the ruling party and government.
Since releasing the album, Winky has had a target on his back with some sections even calling for him to be banned from performing in the country.
While it is not clear why he was taken off stage, many people including politicians have been sharing their views on social media regarding the incident.
“@PoliceZimbabwe blocking a @winkydonline show in Chitungwiza is not just disturbing but shameful. Are the authorities now trying to derail his career by this cowardice? An artist whom we should be celebrating we are busy fighting! Minister @KirstyCoventry what is this?” commented Norton MP Temba Mliswa on his Twitter handle.
“This kind of fascist fear for anything contrary to the state’s position is very unhealthy, dangerous and unprogressive. It stunts growth everywhere since you want to create a docile population of gullible yes-men.
“In our troubled economy where youths are getting destroyed by drugs young people like Winky D should be celebrated and used as models of how ghetto youths can make it cleanly instead of sending ZRP officers to fight him. Do we even know what we want as a country??”
