Stunner released his new album, Maivepiko, early this week.
The 13-track album comes at a time when some sections have been saying the artiste has lost his influence. No surprise there considering there are numerous rappers who have been dominating the local hip-hop scene.
Can Maivepiko put Stunner back on the map?
Saying that Stunner has been overshadowed by the currently trending ‘new school’ rappers is not far from the truth.
Any local hip-hop fan can confirm that the likes of Holy Ten, Voltz JT, Leo Magozz, SaintFloew, Takura and Probeatz are on top of the game.
However, Stunner has always insisted that he is still the best rapper in the country.
He stresses this point on the new album with the song Vakutaura. In the song, he highlights that he still has the hip-hop crown and is ready to battle anyone who thinks otherwise.
Time will tell if the veteran Stunner is on a comeback trail.
How is the music sounding?
Stunner is without a doubt lyrically gifted. As expected, this album was always going to be laden with bars.
In this day and age, however, lyrics and bars alone are not enough. The beat, delivery and other elements also count.
The title song is the classic Stunner sound which is in the same vein as previous hits such as Godo. This might not appeal to the younger generation of hip-hop fans, but can be a bit nostalgic for the mature.
There are a few outstanding songs, otherwise, this album borders on average and good.
Taitidawo where the artiste samples Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car is probably the best of the bunch. Sekemutema came in strong on the tune.
Stunner’s daughter Celeste also did justice to the bonus track Lipstick Stains.
