Tom Holland Takes Break from Acting
Tom Holland, the 27-year-old British actor known for his role as Spider-Man, has announced that he will be taking a break from acting to focus on his mental health.
Holland revealed that he had a challenging time while working on his latest project, the Apple TV+ thriller series called The Crowded Room.
In the series, he plays a character inspired by Billy Milligan, a man who claimed to have multiple personalities.
During an interview with Extra, Holland expressed his love for the learning experience of being a producer for the show.
However, he admitted that juggling the responsibilities of producing and portraying a character with severe mental illness became overwhelming for him.
He shared that the show “broke” him, leading him to take a break and retreat to Mexico for a week to relax on a beach.
As a result, he has decided to take a year off from acting.
Holland acknowledged that the series was a challenging and emotionally intense experience.
He delved into unfamiliar emotions while playing the character and faced additional pressure as a producer, dealing with the everyday problems that arise on a film set.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that he struggled to separate himself from the role, even considering shaving his head to distance himself from the character’s identity.
The Crowded Room provided Holland with insights into his own mental health.
He spoke about recognizing triggers and identifying things that cause stress, which contributed to a better understanding of himself.
Holland has been open about prioritizing his mental health in the public eye, taking breaks from social media and maintaining sobriety.
In 2021, Holland expressed uncertainty about his future as an actor, indicating a desire to explore other avenues.
He mentioned a potential midlife crisis at the age of 25, wanting to try different things after dedicating most of his life to acting.
The Crowded Room, co-starring Amanda Seyfried, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ this Friday.
The series, written by Akiva Goldsman, known for his work on A Beautiful Mind, explores the story of individuals with dissociative identity disorder.
