Romeo Lavia to Chelsea: Player to undergo medicals after clubs agree £58m deal

Chelsea Football Club have reached an agreement with Southampton, sealing a £58 million deal for the talented midfielder, Romeo Lavia.

The financial arrangement encompasses an initial sum of £53 million, along with an additional £5 million designated for performance-related add-ons.

The development has paved the way for Lavia to go for medicals at  Chelsea.

The player is said to have already agreed personal terms with the Blues.

Liverpool were also interested and had initially struck a deal worth £60 million with Southampton but the player highlighted that Stamford Bridge was his preferred destination.

Liverpool’s recent dealings have encountered setbacks, including losing out on signing Moises Caicedo who has also joined Chelsea.

The Blues secured Caicedo’s transfer from Brighton at a historic British record fee of £115 million.

Liverpool’s £111 million offer had been accepted, only for the 21-year-old to redirect his intentions towards Chelsea.

Chelsea has set its sights on bolstering its midfield options during this transfer window. They also wanted to grab Tyler Adams but discussions with Leeds United reached an impasse last week.

Earlier in the negotiations for Lavia, Southampton had initially held firm to a £50 million valuation.

Chelsea had submitted an offer of £48 million the previous week, while Liverpool faced repeated rejections for their three separate offers this summer.

Lavia has a four-year contract with Southampton after making the move from Manchester City last summer.

However, his departure had been widely expected following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League.

Lavia’s recent involvement with Southampton has been limited, as evidenced by his absence from the squad during their victory over Sheffield Wednesday on the season’s opening night.
