Johnny Depp Allocates $1 Million Settlement to Charities Following Defamation Trial
Renowned actor Johnny Depp has carefully selected a group of charitable organizations to which he plans to donate the $1 million settlement he is owed by Amber Heard, as revealed to CNN by a close source to Depp.
The source confirmed on Tuesday that Depp has identified five charities that will receive the settlement funds. These include the Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Marlon Brando’s Tetiaroa Society charity, and the Amazonia Fund Alliance.
According to the source, the esteemed “Pirates of the Caribbean” star intends to contribute $200,000 to each of the five chosen charities.
CNN has reached out to representatives of Heard to seek comment on this significant development.
Last year, a Virginia jury found both Heard and Depp liable for defamation in a highly publicized trial. However, in December, the former couple reached a settlement agreement, with Heard agreeing to pay Depp $1 million in damages.
Depp’s legal team stated at the time that he had pledged to donate the settlement funds received from Heard to various charitable causes.
Originally, the Virginia jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and an additional $5 million in punitive damages in June 2022. On the other hand, Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages but received no punitive damages.
Eventually, in December, the amount owed by Heard to Depp was reduced to $1 million when the former couple settled their differences.
In response to the settlement, Heard posted a statement on her verified Instagram account, emphasizing that she had not made any admission and that the agreement was not an act of concession.
In the statement, Heard expressed her disillusionment with the American legal system, where her testimony had been exploited for entertainment and social media fodder.
Depp’s lawyers, Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew, conveyed their satisfaction with closing this distressing chapter for their client. They stated to CNN, “Throughout the process, Mr. Depp consistently prioritized bringing the truth to light.”
Recently, both Depp and Heard have been photographed in Europe, seemingly focused on moving forward and leaving the public trial behind them.
