The player faces in EA Sports FC 24 will be “amazing,” EA has insisted after the game’s cover was ridiculed on social media.

Last week, EA unveiled FC 24, its first post-FIFA licensed football game, revealing the Ultimate Edition cover in the process . This cover, which is kind of a football version of the cover of the album ‘Sgt.

The Beatles’ 1967 Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ features a number of players, active and retired, posing together for a club photo.

The group shot features legends like Pelé, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham alongside current stars like Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham and Sam Kerr.

It wasn’t long before the memes started pouring in, with the virtual faces of Bukayo Saka, Andrea Pirlo and Ronaldinho being singled out in particular for being the least like their real-life counterparts or just unintentionally hilarious. Some thought the players looked so bad they resembled characters from The Sims rather than photorealistic soccer players.

The faces caused some FIFA fans to worry about the visuals of the game itself. EA has stated that the images are not representative of what players can expect on the virtual field.

In an interview with IGN, John Shepherd VP, executive producer at EA, hinted at the licensing nightmare EA Sports faced in putting together the cover, with multiple approvals making licensing even trickier to manage than usual.

“The number of licenses we have in this game and doing something like that, having so many players on a cover is not an easy feat,” Shepherd said.

“And the number of approvals you have to go through is also very complex. I don’t want to dwell on that too much, but a big part of it is working through all those bits.

“The most important thing, and I think it’s very important, is that we do so much to improve player likeness. Our visuals will be great. We see the feedback. We also see a lot of positive feedback about that cover and what it represents and also what it means for FC in the future.”

Interestingly, the FC 24 reveal trailer, which culminates in the group photo used for the Ultimate Edition cover, does not feature Italian legend Andrea Pirlo, nor is he included in the group photo that marks the beginning of the FC 24 gameplay trailer that was released on July 13. This suggests that Pirlo was a last-minute addition to the Ultimate Edition cover. – IGN
