Alfred Kainga to take on Chicago comedy scene
The U.S. comedy scene is a jungle which devours those who remain at the bottom of the food chain.
The ‘land of opportunity’, as they call it, is just laden with so many talented comics and one has to be really creative and funny in order to stand out and get noticed.
Alfred Kainga is one of those standup comedians who has been moving up the ladder, with his profile growing every time he takes to the stage.
Endorsements from some of the biggest names in the industry including Kevin Hart proves that the chubby fellow does know how to crack a joke (he will argue that he has been training and has lost that weight).
While 2020 has not been a kind year for the entertainment sector Kainga has remained relevant and is still getting slots to perform at prestigious comedy shows.
This weekend he will make his debut at the Riddles Comedy Club in Chicago, which is one of the top comedy affairs in that city.
Speaking to 263Culture Kainga said he relished the opportunity to perform on one of the most prominent comedy scenes in the world.
“I’m not sure you know this but the Chicago comedy scene is one of the most powerful in the world,” said Kainga.
“They have produced great comedians like Bernie Mac, Robin Harris, Damon Williams, DeRay Davis, Lil Rel and the list goes on and on.
“When the opportunity to go and headline in Chicago finally presented itself I was super stoked about it.”
While many events had been put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic, the US has lately been opening up some culture spaces.
“Riddles Comedy is one of the few comedy clubs that just opened back up with this whole pandemic. Capacity is at 50% so it’s not what we are used to.”
For the past few days, Damon Williams who hosts the Riddles Comedy Club, has been hyping up the gig, posting some of Kainga’s epic performances on his social media platforms.
“Damon Williams reached out and he had been trying to get me out there for a while now but this is the time for me to go and get it done. It means a whole lot for industry giants to endorse my work.
“It is definitely a huge deal for me so I’m truly grateful, nervous and excited at the same time.”
Last year, Kainga’s calendar was packed with the comedian staging shows in various parts of the world but this time around things have been different because of the pandemic.
“Work has definitely been affected because this is my third show in five months. All international gigs were cancelled so it has been a weird time for sure.
“Once this show is over I am headlining at the Addison Improv September 2 and then head to Louisiana a few weeks after that.
“Right now things are still in limbo and I am not sure when we will see a normal comedy calendar again but we are still very hopeful.”
Kainga has performed on many high profile stages including Kevin Hart’s Hart of the City on Comedy Central, Shaq All-Star Comedy and The Improvs to name just a few.
