Admire Kamudzengerere is set to launch his second solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare this September.

Titled Our Father’s Inheritance Does Not Allow Us to Sleep, the exhibition will explore the enduring impact of inheritance, both physical and epigenetic, on social identity and power dynamics in today’s society.

The show, which opens to the public on September 27, features new work from Kamudzengerere and builds on over two decades of his artistic exploration.

His art often explores the complex forces that shape personal and collective identities, blending social commentary with personal expression.

Kamudzengerere’s work critically examines how inherited customs, values, and legacies are shaped and devalued within modern contexts.

He invites viewers to reflect on the impact of these legacies on their own lives, while questioning the lasting influence of cultural narratives passed down through generations.

“This body of work invites viewers to confront the ongoing influence of inherited histories and cultural narratives that shape and sometimes disrupt our present realities,” said the curator Fadzai Muchemwa.

She added that Kamudzengerere’s art challenges us to face the legacies that often unsettle contemporary lives.

This exhibition follows his debut solo show at the gallery, Fifth Column, which took place in 2010.

For Kamudzengerere, art is more than a visual medium. It’s a language that penetrates the “protective eggshells” of people, compelling them to engage with the deeper struggles of society.

Describing his creative process, he likens his work to a game of chess, where the canvas is his chessboard and colors are his pieces.

His art reflects the struggle of individuals, much like pawns navigating the complexities of civic society.

As Zimbabwe’s contemporary art scene continues to gain international recognition, Kamudzengerere’s exhibition promises to provoke thoughts and challenge conventional perspectives on inheritance, identity and power.
