Marvelous Nakamba joins Panetolikos
Zimbabwe captain Marvelous Nakamba has joined Greek Super League side Panetolikos, bringing an end to his brief spell at Sheffield Wednesday and opening a new chapter in his European career.
The 32-year-old midfielder has arrived in Greece after completing his move to the club based in Agrinio, following several weeks of uncertainty over his next destination.
Nakamba had been without a club after Sheffield Wednesday released him at the end of the 2025-26 season.
His move to Panetolikos gives the Warriors captain another opportunity to compete in a European top-flight league after spending much of the past decade playing in some of the continent’s leading competitions.
The move also represents a return to familiar territory for Nakamba, who first established himself in Europe with Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem before moving to Belgian giants Club Brugge and later Aston Villa in the English Premier League.
Nakamba’s move to Greece
Panetolikos emerged as a serious destination for Nakamba in July, when reports in Zimbabwe said the Greek club had made the midfielder one of its leading transfer targets.
Negotiations progressed during the following weeks, with the move initially delayed by visa processing.
Nakamba eventually travelled to Greece, arriving ahead of his formal unveiling by the club.
His arrival follows a short stint at Sheffield Wednesday.
The English Championship club signed Nakamba on a free transfer in February 2026 for the remainder of the season.
Wednesday described him as an experienced defensive midfielder and highlighted his career with Aston Villa, Luton Town and the Zimbabwe national team.
Nakamba made five Championship appearances for Wednesday during the 2025-26 campaign before leaving the club at the end of the season.
His move to Panetolikos therefore comes with something to prove.
After years in England, the Greek Super League offers Nakamba a fresh environment and the possibility of regular first-team football as he enters the later stages of his career.
From Bantu Rovers to the Premier League
Nakamba’s journey to Greece has been a long one.
The Hwange-born midfielder began his professional career in Zimbabwe with Bantu Rovers before moving to France, where he joined AS Nancy in 2012.
He subsequently moved to the Netherlands and spent three seasons at Vitesse Arnhem.
It was in the Eredivisie that Nakamba began attracting wider attention, establishing himself as a disciplined defensive midfielder with the ability to protect the back four and contribute to the team’s build-up play.
In 2017 he joined Club Brugge.
The move proved important in his development. Nakamba won the Belgian league title during his first season at the club and established himself as one of the more highly regarded Zimbabwean midfielders playing in Europe.
Two years later came the biggest move of his career.
Aston Villa and the Premier League years
In August 2019, Aston Villa signed Nakamba from Club Brugge for an undisclosed fee, reported at the time to be around £11m.
He became only the fourth Zimbabwean to play in the Premier League, following Bruce Grobbelaar, Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari.
Nakamba made 58 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa during his time at the club.
His role was rarely about scoring goals.
Instead, his value came through his work in front of the defence, where his tackling, positioning and ability to disrupt opposition attacks made him an important option in midfield.
He later moved to Luton Town, initially joining on loan in January 2023.
That move would become one of the defining periods of his career.
The Luton connection
Nakamba quickly became an important member of the Luton side that secured promotion to the Premier League in 2023.
He made 20 appearances during the second half of the 2022-23 season and played in the Championship play-off final against Coventry City at Wembley.
Luton won the match on penalties, with Nakamba scoring his spot-kick as the club secured a remarkable return to the Premier League for the first time in 31 years.
His performances earned him a permanent move to Luton that summer.
The club signed him from Aston Villa on a three-year deal, with then-manager Rob Edwards describing the midfielder as the “glue” that held the team together.
Nakamba subsequently made 14 Premier League appearances for Luton before continuing in the Championship.
His time at Kenilworth Road cemented his reputation in English football and made him one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable players abroad.
A new challenge in the Greek Super League
The move to Panetolikos is a significant change for Nakamba.
Rather than returning to the English lower divisions, he has chosen to continue his career in European top-flight football.
Panetolikos, based in the western Greek city of Agrinio, compete in the country’s top division and are preparing for the 2026-27 campaign.
Nakamba’s experience could be valuable to a squad preparing for another season in the Greek top flight.
His defensive midfield role also gives Panetolikos an experienced player capable of bringing knowledge of English and continental European football to the team.
What the move means for Zimbabwe
For Zimbabwe, Nakamba’s return to European top-flight football is more than simply another club transfer.
He remains the captain of the Warriors and one of the most experienced players in the national team.
His continued involvement at a competitive European level should be welcomed by Zimbabwe, particularly with the Warriors entering another important period under their long-serving captain.
For a national team whose midfield has often been built around Nakamba’s defensive qualities, regular club football will be closely watched.
Can Nakamba revive his European career in Greece?
At 32, Nakamba is entering a different phase of his career.
The Panetolikos move is unlikely to be about making another multimillion-pound transfer or returning to the Premier League. Instead, it provides an opportunity to rediscover consistency, play regularly and continue competing at the highest possible level.
The Greek Super League is also familiar territory for Zimbabwean football supporters.
Nakamba will not be the first Zimbabwean international to play in Greece, with fellow Warriors forward Tino Kadewere having spent time at Aris Thessaloniki.
That gives the move an added interest for Zimbabwean fans following their players abroad.
For Nakamba, however, the immediate priority will be straightforward: settle into his new surroundings, establish himself in the Panetolikos midfield and get regular competitive football.
After a turbulent period that included his departure from Luton and a short spell at Sheffield Wednesday, the move to Greece offers the Warriors captain a chance to start again.
